Castellanus clouds (castle top clouds) are named for their towering appearance; these mid-level clouds have the most intricate and brilliant lighting while shapeshifting above the wild forest hills at sunset, oranges, golds, pinks, purples, and pale blues.

There are vibrant and pink-gold midlevel clouds around 10,000 feet, or 3,000 m. Almost half the upper left frame is occupied by the vaporous clouds at their level where the sun is still shining. At the lower levels two thirds of the way to ground, the sun has already passed behind other clouds. These medium to heavy lower clouds move in from the right against the upper levels which move opposite. The scene darkens as the clip progresses past the halfway point, but small areas of distant sky persist into blue hour.

…rocky, snowy winter peaks. Symmetrical slopes dominate the frame, with rocks and small boulders among evergreens that lead up to near the very tips of these mountain tops. With light, low rolling clouds pouring over and piling on these steep slopes, jagged, snowy peaks poke out like jigsaw teeth.

The sunrise is displayed on Grand Canyon, light slowly brightening. The clouds above in the shifting sunlight transform wildly in the new light, and then gradually lose previous semblance of color. Instead of being lit from below, the clouds above are lit from above shortly after dawn. The desert canyon vista that stretches many miles is eventually illuminated like any other day.

Shadows play across the desert and mountain landscape as the camera pans rightwards. Shadows from these lower clouds that have moved overhead shift the light on the land. High clouds move onward while the stratus layer hugging the mountainous peaks transform in time and the higher wind. The higher north faces of these cliffsides are steeped in snow.

Medium and lower-level clouds, as well as a small ‘scudding’ layer that is halfway up the mountain’s slopes, transform all along this multicolored mountain and arid landscape of yellows, reds, and whites of snow pack on eroded cliff faces and meltwater channels (center of frame at beginning of clip).
