Heat, moisture, and more heat. The Everglades have this in spades. Seen here, the clouds are truly towering in their nature, being taller than they are wide at their base. These updrafts play out as visible clouds and will grow to form rain clouds. Tropical land warming accelerates these clouds around the Everglades, and the warm waters assist in visible absolute humidity.

… Backlit by the sun making stark contrast, undulating. These low-level clouds move along a wind left-to-right, transforming as they go. Stark backlighting is necessary when capturing crepuscular rays and shadows to preserve highlights. Two or three separate bands of cloud are evident in the lower half of the frame, the largest of which show signs of nearing future precipitation, with the upper half containing smaller patches of varying density overhead. Length at 30 fps: Seven seconds and nine frames.

Needles District, Canyonlands. The meadow has a towering rock formation silhouette (right) against the evening sky which has a sliver or portal of open blue throughout. The mostly cloudy sky has areas of golden, glowing rain clouds that move overhead.

The deep dark of the ‘blue hour’ that comes after sunset, with just a few spots of cloud catching glowing pink light, but the clouds continue moving in complex patterns. The mountains are having a definite effect.
