Over Water

  • 2 of 2 | Behind trees, a small fog blanket rolls on Lake Tahoe at sunrise

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

In the distance over Lake Tahoe, a fog bank is rolling. In the sky, clouds and crisscrossing contrails are illuminated around 40,000 ft in the morning sun, when colors change fastest (with the exception of dusk). The chardonnay yellows of the horizon and bluish-purple of the deep sky this dawn are on display.

    Scene notes:

Altocumulus Castellanus are here in the top half of the frame at sunset. Being brilliantly shined upon, they range in color from Grapefruit to shades of pale pink and sharp purple, and the clear areas of sky remain blue, comprising two thirds of the sky. The bottom half has Lake Tahoe, a boat makes an inquisitive entrance and exit, and the water moves with gentle, lapping waves. The other side of the expansive lake is the east sky, with more clouds the further observed.

  • Behind a river that flows from the point of view, geysers release steam under pink sky

  • Time-lapse of geysers at sunrise, pinkish in morning light above a river

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

Active geysers vents huge amounts of water vapor in the morning sky next to a flowing river. The plume ranges from bright pink to gold and ranges in brightness due to a cloud off-camera blocking the light momentarily.

  • Crater Lake early morning in the winter with the wind on water below moving

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

Winter on Crater Lake: the snow covering the landscape is fresh. The vast lake is not entirely in the shadows of the clouds, as a break in the layer of thick low-level cover reveals light on the lake. The turbulent winds blow on the water, making their marks on the surface as they travel, along with the shadows. Blue sky patches are slowly covered by dawn clouds, which clearly precipitate on the opposing side of the caldera, near Wizard Hat Island. The ridge that comprises the crater’s rim, a drop of 100s of feet, is a winter forest.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    43 seconds and 12 frames.

  • Behind some trees, Lake Tahoe and a pink sunset of Cirrus

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

Even the snow of the foreground is pink from the ambient light of the clouds. A fiery canvas ablaze with the day’s last minutes, streaks of vibrant crimson and passionate pink ignite the western sky. Below, a tranquil expanse of water mirrors the celestial drama, reflecting hues of rose and lavender. Silhouetted pines stand sentinel along the snowy banks, their dark forms a stark contrast to the luminous horizon. Distant, snow-capped peaks fade into a soft, ethereal blue, a gentle boundary between earth and the incandescent heavens. The snow continues in the distant mountain Mt Tallac (far away and at right).
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    27 seconds and 23 frames.

    Scene notes:

Pines and other conifers are framing the sky on all sides of the scene in the early morning above Lake Tahoe, which is surrounded by a forest, and blanketed partially with a fog layer. The sky quickly brightens as high clouds and an airplane contrail turn all the colors of sunrise. The ground is snowy. A similar clip exists.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    38 seconds and 4 frames.
