Aurora Borealis aka Northern Lights

What makes seeing the aurora borealis so special? It is not easy to describe the northern lights with words, in any way. In the context of the winter night in the wild woods, wolves are howling, cold biting, and once in a while, you hear a stick or something snapping in the distance.

Some tips for ‘finding’ the northern lights:

Use a website that will track solar flares and give a forecast for solar activity. This can give you time for preparation.

Look for partly cloudy or clear, new-to-quarter moon nights.

Have a place in mind ahead of time with a decent view of the sky.

If doing photography, frosting on the lens may be your number one problem, especially in winter.

If possible, avoid driving at night, especially in adverse conditions. Be fully prepared and organized, with a safety and item checklist if going out into the wild on foot.
